Masyarakat dan Kepulauan Jawa
The Javanese are an ethnic group native to the Indonesian island of Java. At approximately 100 million people (as of 2011), they form the largest ethnic group in Indonesia. They are predominantly located in the central to eastern parts of the island. There are also significant numbers of people of Javanese descent in most Provinces of Indonesia, Malaysia, Suriname, South Africa and the Netherlands.
Today the majority of the Javanese people identify themselves as Muslims, with a minority identifying as Christians and Hindus, but because Javanese civilization has been influenced by more than a millennium of interactions between the native animism Kejawen and the Indian Hindu—Buddhist culture, the influence is still visible in Javanese history, culture, traditions and art forms.
The interesting fact is that Java is divided into four provinces, West Java, Central Java, East Java and Banten, and also two special regions, Jakarta and Yogyakarta. This then maps Javanese spoken by the Javanese people in the respective provinces and regions. Javanese spoken by those living in East Java will be very much different from Javanese spoken by those in West Java, while Javanese spoken by those living in Central Java and East Java will be very much alike; we analogically say that the difference will be like one we found between British English and American English. Some words are different, but they understand each other.
Language
Javanese is the language of the Javanese people from the central and eastern parts of the island of Java, in Indonesia. There are also pockets of Javanese speakers in the northern coast of western Java. It is the native language of more than 98,417,022 people (more than 42% of the total population of Indonesia).
Javanese is part of the Austronesian languages, but it is otherwise not particularly close to other languages and is difficult to classify, though not too dissimilar from neighbouring languages such as Sundanese,Madurese and Balinese. Most speakers of Javanese also speak Indonesian (a standardized form of Malay) for official and commercial purposes, as well as a means to communicate with non-Javanese Indonesians.
The language is spoken in Central and East Java, as well as on the north coast of West Java. Smaller groups of people live in North Sumatra also still used the language. In Suriname, creolized Javanese is spoken among descendants of plantation migrants brought by the Dutch during 19th century. In Madura, Bali, Lombok and the Sunda region of West Java, it is also used as a literary language. It was the court language inPalembang in South Sumatra, until the palace was sacked by the Dutch in the late 18th century.
Javanese is written with the Latin script, Javanese script, and Arabic script. Our clients usually prefer Latin script to Javanese script and Arabic script as this will be easily understood by the Javanese people in common.
Javanese is the tenth largest language (in terms of native speakers), and the largest language without official status. It is spoken or understood by approximately 100 million people. At least 45% of the total population of Indonesia are of Javanese descent or live in an area where Javanese is the dominant language. Five out of the six Indonesian presidents since 1945 have been of Javanese descent. It is therefore not surprising that Javanese has a deep impact on the development of Indonesian, the national language of Indonesia, which is itself a modern development from Malay.
There are three main dialects in the modern language: Central Javanese, Eastern Javanese, and Western Javanese. There is a dialect continuum from Banten in the extreme west of Java to Banyuwangi in the eastern corner of the island. All Javanese dialects are more or less mutually intelligible.
Based on the current data and our observation in our daily life, high to middle class Javanese people tend to use Indonesian as their daily communication while the lower class Javanese people tend to use Javanese as their daily communication. However, these lower class Javanese people also understand Indonesian well.
Our Records
Our records show that number of clients wishing to have their document translated into Javanese is not so significant. This is due to fact that the materials to be translated were related to business or other special events in which it will be better delivered in Indonesian than in Javanese. However, we often see some networking companies localizing their webpages into Javanese and in our opinion, this will not be effective to reach the targeted audience. Our opinion is not an empty bull-shit. As we previously explained and in accordance with the data we have taken from the related trusted resource and some facts we found on the spot, there is no single manual for certain products using Javanese. Instead, it uses Indonesian as this language will represent well.
We are not in a position of selling a blind service to our potential clients, but we strongly suggest that they consult with us before deciding whether to really translate their documents into Javanese. We know they have their own targeted audience and our job is to make the sure that the target is on track. Contact us for consultation, it is free!
